The cloisonne sea turtle shell is made using the technique cloisonne enamel. It entails carefully bending ribbons of fine wire and fusing them into place. Then the cells are filled with colored glass enamel applies over pure gold foil. The turtle shell took as many as 30 firings. The shell is then grinded down flush to the wires. It is set in a hand fabricated sterling silver setting. The fins, head and feet are all made using traditional silversmith techniques.
