The inspiration for this necklace came from the pottery pendant - sunflowerrs - from Duane Collins of elementspottery. I thought about this one a long time...and maybe those thoughts were closer to being completed than I thought when I started to gather lemon jade in both rondelles AND Butterflies, as well as the antiqued finished stamped birds and dragonflies and larger butterfly with partially folded wings.
I love these epiphanies...and I was off to the races. How to attach the pendant was the first obstacle...it had large holes on either side and not wanting string to show I fashioned a little mound of one rondelle, the dragonfly charm and coiled gold wire which went into the hole and joined the wire from the other side at the back...there I could twist the two wires together to not only hold the dragonfly acoutremonts, but also could form the "hook" for the main stringing wire.
The other obstacle was the large butterlfy...how do I attach it? Very simply...I ran the stringing wire through one open part in the middle added 6 of the gold plated spacers I was using and then the other end of the wire goes back through the opposite hole in the middle of the butterfly. Phew! It ends up with a pretty sparkly "belt" of gold.
Problems solved other than making sure the larger butterfly matched up with it's opposite which is smaller and composed of lemon jade.. After re-stinging several times and adding 2 styles of beautiful czech beads with picasso finishes (adds an aged look), I finished it off with a leaf toggle clasp that is goldtone. Also notice the little stamped birds on either side near the front of the piece.
I had more of the painted stampings and used those for matching earrings which I list separately. A purchase together gives you a discount of 20% with coupon NEWSLETTER2011 but you must ask for it.
The total circumference is 18 inches and the sunflower pendant adds another inch.
The pendant measures: 1 inch by 2 1/4 inches and the large butterfly 1 1/2 inches by 1 1/2 inches, approx.
A whimsical design indeed, but evoking summertime in the meadow.
