The Un-Named Box

Another Asian influenced box, this time using a totally different type of wood that just so happens to come from Asia.
Black Palm isn't really a wood, it's a grass, and has all the properties of compressed grass. It comes from a palm tree indigenous to South East Asia, mainly Myanmar (Burma). The wood is extremely difficult to work with as it splinters easily until finished. Hard to work with, but the end result is worth it.
The other woods are: Black & White Ebony, Holly and Maple
The stringing is holly and is purely decorative; the center ornament is a dice of a red dragon from a roll playing game.
To offset the rough texture, this box needed two coats of urethane, 7 coats of hand rubbed oil and three coats of English wax.
The size is 10.5" x 6" x 4.5"
