The Cryptex Triplehub Combination Lock Box

The idea of a Cryptex was conceptualized by Dan Brown in his novel "The Da Vinci Code", purportedly invented by Leonardo da Vinci.

This vessel is essentially a combination lock box: after dialing in a specific combination code, the center storage tube is released and able to be pulled out of the top of the main body. A turned stopper, complete with instrument-grade O-ring, is then removed, revealing an air and moisture tight storage space within the brass cylinder. Stored items can typically include documents, love letters, jewelry and keepsakes, cigars, etc.

An integrated stand is included, allowing the Cryptex to be displayed in a vertical position.

They are intended to be customizable, with the selection of different species of ornate woods for the body, and the inclusion of different metal finishes (such as nickel, brass, or gun-blued steel), as well as various lengths of the overall piece. Up to seven combination rings can be implemented, depending upon the user-specified code word. A mnemonic device, typically in the form of a riddle, can be engraved upon the metal banding encircling the cryptex body for a nominal fee.

As these Cryptex are handmade, there is typically some design variation from piece to piece.

To fabricate the combination rings, eight specific fixtures had to be designed and built. Some 16 machining steps are needed to complete a ring. The characters on the combination rings are each engraved with an old pantograph engraving machine. Also, I developed a ratcheting detent system for the rings, so the combination rings actually click, and stay in place, as they are spun around.

Before ordering, please contact me to specify details, such as choice of wood specie, metal finish, as well as your specific combination (up to 7 letters, no less than 3). Each additional combination ring after 4 is an extra $250. Custom engraving upon the perimeter of the top brass hub is also available for an additional charge: contact me for a quote.

NOTE: My pieces are made to order. The 3-4 week shipping time is an estimate: it can and has been much longer, depending upon my order work load. Contact me for a more accurate build schedule.
