Like many other creative arts, there is more than one way to tie-dye.
The process I use cuts no corners and takes no shortcuts. You are left with a beautiful piece of hanging art that can be washed and handled without any special care!
I start with a 56" x 56" 100% cotton tapestry. The cloth is submersed in a container of a high pH water solution. This solution allows the high-end fiber reactive dyes to bond to the cotton fibers at room temperature.
After the cloth has dried to a slight dampness, the item is designed, drawn, and tied by hand. This process uses no stencils or pre-worked designs, and each item is always uniquely different!
The tied item is now ready for some dye! This is where the art can really flow. I usually have 20-25 different colors mixed and ready to go at any given time. A number of these dyes are custom mixed to allow me to make just about any color you desire!
After the meticulous dying process, your item is left to cure for up to 5 days. The dye manufacturer recommends 24 hours, but we have had many conversations with other tie dye artists who feel that longer is beneficial to the process. I start with a minimum of 48 hours, and will leave the item for as long as space allows up to 5 days.
After curing, the item is rinsed by hand for anywhere from 10-15 minutes. This is done until the runoff water is mostly clear. From there, the item is placed on a hot cycle in the washer with a generous helping of Synthrapol surfectant to clear any left over dye. This rinse out process is very thorough, and I have not encountered any feedback about a stained load of laundry!
The tapestry is then hung up to dry. My laundry room is always a colorful place to be :)
This design can be ordered in any color palette. You can choose a color for the heart, and up to 6 colors for the sprialing bands. Some color combination don't mix very well, so if there is an issue, I will let you know as soon as possible and quickly give you some alternate palettes based on your chosen colors.
There are other main patterns that I can do. The cost of the heart-swirl tapestry is $50, and other patterns can go as high as $75. If you have something in mind, shoot me a message and I will try my best to make it happen! (some other patterns available: peace sign, mandala star, stars within stars, acoustic guitar, and more!)
