Thuya burl is a rare root burl native to Morocco. Its beauty and elegance have caused centuries of high demand leaving the Thuya trees scarce. This highly sought after conifer only grows in the forests of the Atlas Mountains. The wood has a unique cedar-like aroma and the burl has a deeper color, a more concentrated aroma, and a fascinating grain containing figuring exhibiting numerous distinct burl eyes. Today these burls are very scarce and hard to locate, extract, and transport. Burls are transported from mountainous areas on mules and donkeys as they are the only form of transportation suited to the task. The oil from the Thuya tree has been used for religious ceremonies for many years.
This pen and box set was crafted from Moroccan Thuya burl with a piece of spalted maple placed in the bottom of the box to provide contrast to the darker wood of the pen. The pen components are made in the U.S. and are solid stainless steel polished to a brilliant finish. The writing mechanism is a German made Schmidt 5888 rollerball, one of the smoothest writing refills in the pen industry. This is a truly unique and rare piece and will add beauty and elegance to any desk.
We will work with you through the design of a pen and box set that is specific to your liking or the liking of the intended recipient. A wide variety of wood materials can be used from woods found throughout the world.
