Traverse Board
A traverse board is a memory aid formerly used in dead reckoning navigation to easily record the speeds and directions sailed during a watch. This traverse board is 6" x 11", made of cherry with a sisal rope hanger. It is inscribed with the name of a ship - the Friendship of Salem - which was a U.S. merchantman captured by the British during the war of 1812. The US Coast Guard currently has a replica of it docked in Salem, MA which is used both as a museum ship and a working training vessel.
