Tree Stair
This is a project that came into Morrell Metalsmiths a couple of years ago. Given the scale of the project and the timeline Leigh Morrell put together a team of blacksmiths including Leigh, his son Justin, Ned James and myself. to tackle the task. I took a lead role in translating the architects design concept into functional forged parts and forging the railing system. It was a remarkable experience, four very knowledgable blacksmiths pooling our resources to take the architects concept sketch, figure out all the parts, and assemble them into a staircase. But not only did we have to figure that all out but to do so in such a way that we could then take it apart, transport it to the job site, carry it up the stairs to its tower location, reassemble it and have it come out looking like it grew on the spot.
