Walnut Book Case Chest Of Drawers

This piece was commissioned for the family room of a client's house. The room has a fireplace at the far end and the client wanted a pair of bookcases with storage space to flank the fireplace on either side. The dimensions of the bookcase were determined by the size of available space between the back wall and the windows and the ceiling height. The design is original however with a traditional inspiration. The base features 4 ball and claw feet each hand carved out of solid 16/4 walnut. The base molding is made from 8/4 walnut with bloodwood accents. There are 8 drawers each with hand cut dovetails. The drawer fronts were taken from the highest quality and most beautiful grain of the available walnut.
The lower and upper case sides are solid walnut boards, selected so as to eliminate the need for a glue up. The waist molding once again features bloodwood accents. The upper case has a solid wood adjustable shelving system. The doors were designed to have a "K" apparent from the silhouette from the walnut munions. The "K" represents the last name of the client and further personalized the work. The mortise and tenons fitting the doors together are reinforced with bloodwood pegs and the "K" on each door has a bloodwood border. The top molding is a solid walnut built up molding with dentil accent. The dentil molding was used to match the architectural crown molding in the room. The dentil partitions are backed by a bloodwood strip finalizing the subtle red accentuation.
