Walnut Radius Jewelry Box With Apple Blossom Inlay
This piece was commissioned by a gentleman whose wife already owned older English cottage furniture that had been passed down through the family. I wanted to do something subtle yet bold ; something that would catch the eye of anyone who would walk into the room, but not anything too outlandish. Since I was given full license to design this is what I came up with: solid American Walnut legs shaped from one piece of 1 ½" walnut, mortise and tenon construction for strength and hidden joints, and custom bent panels to match the radius of the legs, then topped off with marquetry that wraps to the sides of the box. For subtlety I used a darker walnut burl for the background of the panels and the top. The veneers used in the marquetry include died white sycamore, dyed green maple, mahogany, and macassar ebony. The interior of the box, the drawer, and the removable dividers are all made from solid maple and the bottom is lined with black velvet. The hinges are made from solid brass and are fully concealed when the box is closed. Everything was sanded to 320 grit then coated with two coats of shellac, two coats of vinyl sealer, then finally two coats of conversion varnish
The marquetry drawing and design comes from an apple blossom. The meaning of the customers name is soft, gentle, sweet, or in some places it means apple.
