This is the largest project I have ever taken on. It started in 2007 when I worked at philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, while I was a historical interpreter portraying a homesteader of the early 20th century.
The project was nicknamed "the Illegal Windmill" because the idea to build it was shot down by ranch management, but I had already built it by the time the news had reached me...
Because of limited supplies and materials in the original building, I knew it would not survive the winter, so I took it down at the end of the summer and planned on replacing it.
During the winter, back home in Michigan, I built a better one (the one you see in these photos) and drove it out the next spring.
The entire windmill is 18 feet tall with a 8 foot diamiter wheel. Blades and tower are wood, all mechanical parts are welded steel.
