Chess Case For Oversize Pieces
The wife of a friend commissioned me to design and build a chess case for his birthday. The ceramic chess pieces were very special to him in that they were hand made by his mother-in-law. The difficulty they presented in designing the case is that they were especially large. The king was approximately 6" high while the knight was almost 3" wide. This meant that the board (which is also the top) had to be able to accommodate these pieces. The case is constructed of black walnut with mitered and splined corners. The height of the box is extended because two stacked trays were necessary. The trays are constructed of baltic birch and lined with royal blue felt. A joy I received from this project is that I was invited to the birthday party and was able to see my friend's face when he opened this present.
