Danish Gustavian Commode
CustomMade by Gary Barcus
You might call this "Danish Country on steroids", with handcarved shells on the turned, fluted and tapered Louis XVI legs, reeding, recessed and raised panels, pearl beading, dentil moulding, and handcarved "bellflower" details that are actually carved as shell shapes. The graceful sweep of the end
… panels are filled with a pierced basket motif and painted flowers. This piece was painted by a furniture artist, not me.The gilt details are an authentic touch.
The built-in mirror on the wall above conceals a recessed flat screen TV. The swags and rosettes are all hand carved. I think the frame was originally intended to be finished and gilded similar to the commode, but the owners decided they really liked it plain, so it was left white.

Bookcase Built into Dead Space in Wall
by David Nov 20th 2012
We had Gary do two projects at our apartment in the Ritz-Carlton residences: a built in bookcase and reconfiguring a built in desk. Both jobs required careful detail work to match existing moldings in the living room. The desk was a special challenge as it involved some creative thinking on the design. Gary stood looking at the previous desk for quite some time and then came up with a brilliant idea about how to make the area more useful and aesthetically pleasing. His work is flawless, he comes when he says he will, and cleans up carefully. We will use him again if we have a need and we recommend him without reservation.

Exterior Wooden Doors
by Joseph Nov 06th 2012
Gary created a very custom exterior wood door made out of African mahogany with detailed moldings, repurposed glass windows and new hardware. Gary visited my home to look at the existing door and to make recommendations based on what he saw. He created a template, ordered the material and started to work on my project. Once the door was fabricated he brought it to my house to make sure the new door fit in the existing opening. After a couple tweaks and some wood shavings the door fit like a glove. My new door looks like its been here for ever and the craftsmanship is outstanding. I could not have asked for a better looking door for my turn of the century home. It's truly one of a kind that can not be purchased in a store.
