Lantern - Apapane And The Chief

This lanai (patio) lantern is composed of two parts. The lantern is a combination of traditional stained glass with fused glass elements. The section of glass with the red and black apapane bird is a loose composition using glass shards which were then full fused into the clear glass. The black glass has a Hawaiian kapa design motif impressed into the glass.

The base of the lantern has a slightly raised perimeter to embrace the glass lantern. The base is a mosaic of both stained glass and natural elements in a meandering trail around the lantern. The interior square (atop which sits the lantern) is a mosaic of mirror to add to the reflective quality when the oil lamp is lit.

This piece was commissioned for an avid bird watcher who now lives on the Big Island of Hawaii. The kapa imprint was a nod to his career as a professional football player for the Kansas City Chiefs.
