This coffee table is contemporary, modern, organic and boldly fascinating. I started with a large live edge slab of Big Leaf Maple Burl that was packed with figuring. The wooden top contains curl, tiger striping, birds eye, chatoyance, a void that goes through the surface and the round/ bumpy textures along the natural edges that are commonly found on burls. Through experimental dyeing and tinting processes, the top resembles something out of this world. It looks more like a meteorite than a slab of wood. For this reason, I selected the acrylic bases (lucite). The combination of mediums gives the appearance of a floating coffee table (or traveling meteorite). The wood has been flattened, sanded smooth and finished in a high gloss poly to accentuate the natural character and coloration. The golds, blacks, browns and tans dance across the top and demand attention.
