Illuminated Kitchen Wall Art - Lake Titicaca Diptych

This pair of fused glass panels were created as part of a kitchen remodel project. What had once been a kitchen window was now an interior wall. In order to increase the light in the kitchen, the client proposed that the former window become a light box behind the fused glass panels creating wall art with light.
The design was inspired by travel photos the client had taken while visiting Lake Titicaca. The fond memories and bold palette were a natural fit for the project. I suggested using hand raked glass as a way of keeping the dynamic colors and painterly quality. And so the entire piece is composed of hand raked glass that I created in my kiln. I also added two Aztec symbols the I kiln carved in the bottom left and right hand corners to add to the sense of place.
The client decided on using ultra thin LED panels to back light the two panels. The light is adjustable which provides more possibilities for the ambiance. The result is a unique piece of fused glass wall art with a very personal connection for the homeowners. Each panel is 13" x 19"
