This piece was commissioned as a wedding gift for the client's son and future daughter-in-law. The design needed to incorporate traditional themes from both the groom's and the bride's family traditions. Blending Celtic and Jewish imagery underscored a compatibility that resonated with the client.
The strong linear quality of the Star of David and the Celtic Knot was my starting point. The idea of expressing eternal commitment via a never-ending weave provided the frame for the design. The points of the star are woven into the knot to interlock the two images.
The central area was the canvas for the more intricate part of the design. The client's wife had suggested including the Claddagh (two hands holding a heart crowned with jewels), a traditional Celtic symbol of marriage. I combined this with The Tree of Life, often used to decorate Jewish marriage certificates. The result is a Tree of Life whose roots anchor the heart of the Claddagh and whose leaves become the hands holding the heart.
The central area is made of hand raked glass. The hues of blue and green swirl together into an organic play of color. The Tree of Life and Claddagh are done in high temperature fired liquid gold. The Celtic Knot is kiln carved into the back of the glass to add a textural element. The fused glass is framed in copper and seated into a travertine base that is framed in mahogany.
