This piece was a bit of a departure for me. My clients wanted something made of Texas mesquite, something a bit wild and masculine that would fit well in a room full of mounted deer heads and bobcat skins. Although this is not a typical assignment for me, I embraced the challenge to create a piece that was both rough and refined.

I filled the cracks and holes that are indigenous to mesquite with a very high quality boat epoxy which turns these 'flaws' into glowing features, giving the whole piece a sense of light and animation. The movement and energy of the grain, the glowing orange color of the wood, the upward chaotic motion of the live edge slats, and the fact that mesquite is most often thought of as firewood, all contribute to the name of this extraordinary piece.
