Mission/Craftsman Music Stand

This was a custom design originally based on the Cherry Stand I had previously built. This design needed to both stand true to the early 20th century style but also be transportable.
All parts were built from 1.5-2" thick quartersawn oak for the straight grain. I used exposed mortises for the main components of the music rest and dressed up most of the joints with walnut pegs. The center column is built with a double locking rabbet joint to keep everything straight and a key allows the height to be adjusted.
Hex bolts were hidden in the base to allow for easy transportation.
On the top, I inlaid a series of walnut strips to resemble a music staff-to include the bar lines-but didn't go as far as adding notes.
Finishing was done with a mission oak stain, semi-gloss polyurethane and a coating of wax where the center post needed to slide.
The saxophone is mine; I had to take a break from practicing Careless Whisper to take the picture. :D
