Murphy Bed/Home Work Station

Designed & constructed for a wheelchair bound customer living in Washington, DC, who needed both the extra bed at her apartment and the work station. The 1st photo shows the unusually small space that was used for the Murphy bed; space that was wasted before the Murphy bed was installed.

The customer requested large storage bins with doors above the bed to store pillows, blankets, and sheets. A special hardware kit was installed to to allow the customer to raise and lower the Murphy bed with ease. The pull-down work station included lighting and a cork board. Additionally, with the Murphy bed lowered, recessed lighting above the bed allowed for late night reading.

The frame and raised panel construction of the Murphy bed was entirely of poplar and MDF. All surfaces were sealed and primed before two (2) coats of white, semi-gloss interior paint were applied. The entire Murphy bed was constructed and finish applied in the wood shop of The Plane Edge in Dowling, Michigan. Each section was then carefully wrapped and loaded for delivery and installation in the customer's apartment in Washington, DC.
