While designing custom sword stand for a client I realized that most of the displays out there are designed solely for function with little regard for the art that it displays. A martial art sword is a weapon used in an art that demands grace and flow of energy and with that in mind, this is one of the designs I developed. It is handcrafted from black walnut and cherry with a gloss lacquer finish to protect as well as enhance the colors. The long graceful stalks are hand-carved from black walnut and then sanded to a smooth finish. The tops were carved and shaped from aged cherry to resemble leaves. The two bowls are turned from solid cherry with the insides finished black with a technique that allows the finish to roll over the top edge creating an organic feel. Then everything sits on a solid piece of distressed cherry.
