Painting | Naylor Lake

I have made a number of paintings from colored-pencil drawings that I make while hiking in the mountains or the desert. These paintings are created in oil paint on stretched linen. This one is called "Naylor Lake." This lake sits below a high trail on Guanella Pass in the Front Range of Colorado. As a I drew, I was sitting on tundra grasses, surrounded by blue forget-me-nots, and large boulders covered with lichens. The drawing series uses a number of visual conventions designed to simplify the complexity of what I saw and to intensify the image by means of color and form. I used both tactics to convey the excitement of being in these wilderness landscapes and also to get a lot of work done before strong weather or normal discomforts drive us onward. 42"x22"
