Painting | Saint Louis Lake
I have made a number of paintings from colored-pencil drawings that I make while hiking in the mountains or the desert. These paintings are created in oil paint on stretched linen. This one is called "St. Louis Lake." The lake is right behind and below the rocks in this image; it was a very windy day and we sat behind the rocks to reduce the wind. The drawing series uses a number of visual conventions designed to simplify the complexity of what I saw and to intensify the image by means of color and form. I used both tactics to convey the excitement of being in these wilderness landscapes and also to get a lot of work done before strong weather or normal discomforts drive us onward.
