Rag Rug Coasters & Trivets

These coasters and trivets are made in the style of a "rag rug". Rag rugs first became popular in the 1890's, influenced by the Arts & Crafts" movement. During the depression of the 1930's, when homemakers had to "make do or do without", rag rugs gained even more popularity. Today, as we try to reduce our footprint, repurposing or "upcycling" materials is on the rise again.

We use old (and occasionally new) primarily cotton fabrics to make the strips that I use to crochet these coasters and trivets. Coasters are approximately 5" in diameter; trivets are approximately 8". There is also an in-between size called a mug-rug (about 6"), for larger mugs of coffee or tea. Sizes vary a bit depending on the weight of the fabric, so the sizes given are approximate. We can also make larger trivets if you are looking for something more like a placemat or table topper.

Each coaster, trivet, or mug rug is unique. We can use fabrics of all one color, or a combination of colors, to match your decor. The best look is achieved when there is a variety of colors and shades. Because the fabric strips are crocheted directly after cutting, the edges of the strips are unfinished, and some of the threads stick out after crocheting. That's partly what gives the trivets their homey look. When you wash them, some of the threads come off, but there will always be a few. It's the look!

Let us know what colors you are looking for. We have hundreds of yards of fabric in inventory, and can meet just about any need.
