Handmade Cradle ~ Solid White Ash
White Ash is the ideal wood because it has a definite sense of strength and purity. It has that instantly recognizable grain, referred to as 'Cathedral cut'. Solid and quite resistant to warping, Ash is one of the most likable hardwoods.
Using high-quality joinery and thoughtful design, we arrived at a good balance between structural soundness and visual gratification. The cradle itself is a rabbet - a precise method using the router table. The stretcher is a center board connecting the two legs with a 'through-tenon' which protrudes slightly. Using a plunge router, we cut the mortises into the legs. Mortise and Tenon is the strongest most effective joint for this because it keeps the cradle sturdy, reliable, and full of integrity. The through-tenon calls attention to this joint, adding to the appeal and indicating a degree of proficiency in craftsmanship. The cradle is sanded through five grits of sandpaper to be softer and smoother than any furniture you've ever felt. It has a hand-rubbed oil finish that shows off the attractiveness of the wood's natural color. The finish is 100% safe for contact with skin as it has cured.
Can be made in a variety of hardwoods, which may affect the cost.
