Sculpture | Reflect Upon

Noting the similarity between the aspen logs I work with and the bone strokes of chinese characters, I set out make a character out of sections of dead aspen. The individual pieces have both the natural bone-colored surface and also some milled and sanded portions. I air-brushed the ends in black and red and assembled the character. The background boards serve not only as sculptural design in its own right, but also as a mechanism to hold the two non-contiguous strokes. It is made of birch plywood, painted with diluted acrylic so that the plywood's grain is faintly visible. The additional characters resting on those boards are my own, from a long standing collection of glyphs and symbols culled from my notebooks. The piece has been varnished; the varnish has been rubbed with gentle abrasive to reduce the sheen to a minimum.
