My sister in gave me an interesting image of an old movie theater we knew. The image had been constructed with facets. I asked John if he could make a painting similar to this. He said yes but he wanted to give the idea a more exciting structure using a variety of other images. Moving toward this commission we reviewed digital sketches that showed me what the painting would look like. I gave him the go ahead, and he went to work. I even got to see the painting in his studio a couple of times before it was complete. It was a pleasure to be included. He also posted the progressive images on the web as he got closer to completion. Palace now hangs in my dining room and invokes fond memories for me of going to movies with my sister.
My snake sculptures are carved from standing dead aspen trees. The surface of the tree trunk has been removed, eliminating the round branch bumps characteristic of aspen, and also eliminating the complex weather-polished surfaces I use in a lot my other sculpture and woodwork. For these pieces I sand the wood until it has the velvety feel of expensive cotton artboard. I paint the body pattern with air-brushed acrylic and hand-held stencils. This snakes pattern consists of five passes down the length of the body, adding color new color as I go; some of chevrons receive two colors. These snakes can be wall hung, or placed horizontally.
They are varnished, and the varnish is sanded gently to remove excess sheen.
Dimensions: Variable. The bodies will be between 4" and 7" maximum width.
