Skylight - Brother Sun, Sister Moon

This piece was commissioned to celebrate the birthday of the client's husband who is a sommelier. The theme of the design is "De cep en verre," from the stalk to the glass. It shows the seasons through the ripening of the grape. The sun and moon, with the flame and soaring bird kiln carved into the glass, are at the center of the design and represent the client's two children. The central blue area, the leaves and grape clusters were create using hand raked fused glass. This technique gives the glass a rich, organic look as the colors flow and swirl into each other. The outlines of the leaves were kiln carved into the back of the glass. Glass nuggets were fused onto the surface of the grape clusters for an added dimensional look.
The panel was built to be installed as a sunlight in the client's home and so has intersecting reinforcement bars soldered onto the back. The overall dimensions are 36" x 35". Using the diagonal for the design elements kept it from having and obvious top or bottom.
