Made in the style of Tang dynasty ancestor altar tables, this solid Vermont cherry credenza is a blend of old and new.
In Confucian households these tabletops with their everted flanges would be placed against a central wall in the home on which hung tablets honoring the family ancestors. Incense urns along with food and water offerings would be placed on top.
The "altar" tables were also used as display tables and could be found placed against the wall beneath scroll paintings and calligraphy.
This piece has classical Chinese and western style joinery.
