The Rustic Coffee Table Made From New Orleans Barge Board
This simple, yet rustically elegant coffee table was handmade by me using wood that once held together a New Orleans home damaged during Hurricane Katrina. It's refined design is meant to show off the deep patina and scars left behind after the storm. The three shelves along the bottom are changeable to your liking. They can be grouped together, spaced apart, or removed for more space.
The house was a small shotgun home in the 7th Ward neighborhood. The table top is made from the wooden cypress planks that covered the outside of the home. The legs and rails are made from heart pine beams from the interior of the home.
In New Orleans this type of wood is called barge board. Its history dates back to 1803 after the United States purchased Louisiana and New Orleans. After the purchase, Americans along the East Coast began to steadily migrate in to New Orleans. They built barges and floated them down river. Once here, they took apart their barges and used the wood to build their new homes. The wood used in this table dates back nearly 200 years ago and has the scars and charm to show its age.
The table measures 42" wide x 24" deep x 19" high. Each piece is made to order and can be customized to your preference. I offer a variety of different stains and sizes. Some larger sizes may increase the price.
